Week TwentyOne of Books The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian
★★★★★

“If you let people into your life a little bit, they can be pretty damn amazing.”

“I grabbed my book and opened it up. I wanted to smell it. Heck, I wanted to kiss it. Yes, kiss it. That’s right, I am a book kisser. Maybe that’s kind of perverted or maybe it’s just romantic and highly intelligent.”

“If you care about something enough, it’s going to make you cry. But you have to use it. Use your tears. Use your pain. Use your fear. Get mad. Arnold, get mad.”

“I was studying the sky like I was an astronomer, except it was daytime and I didn’t have a telescope, so I was just an idiot.”

“There are three thousand four hundred and twelve books here,” Gordy said. “I know that because I counted them.”“Okay, now you’re officially a freak,” I said. “Yes, it’s a small library. It’s a tiny one. But if you read one of these books a day, it would still take you almost ten years to finish.”“What’s your point?”“The world, even the smallest parts of it, is filled with things you don’t know.”Wow. That was a huge idea. Any town, even one as small as Reardan, was a place of mystery. And that meant Wellpinit, the smaller, Indian town, was also a place of mystery. Okay, so it’s like each of these books is a mystery. Every book is a mystery. And if you read all of the books ever written, it’s like you’ve read one giant mystery. And no matter how much you learn, you keep on learning so much more you need to learn.”Yes, yes, yes, yes,” Gordy said. “Now doesn’t that give you a boner?”I am rock hard,” I said.”

“Drinking would shut down my seeing and my hearing and my feeling,” she used to say. “Why would I want to be in the world if I couldn’t touch the world with all of my senses intact?”

“I used to think the world was broken down by tribes,” I said. “By black and white. By Indian and white. But I know that isn’t true. The world is only broken into two tribes: The people who are assholes and the people who are not.”

“That’s the whole point of life, you know? To meet new people.”
So at first, I thought this book was going to kind of childish because I saw there were doodles, but my friend Indiga said it was a good book so I was like why not. It was really good though. I read it in a few hours in one go. I liked it because the character had a lot of quirks to him, and he reminded me of Charlie from Perks. Also, the drawings added a lot of depth to the story. It’s actually a really insightful. I really enjoyed it. I definitely recommend it to everyone.

“If everybody else your age is doing something very different than what you’re doing, there’s always going to be someone saying to you you might not succeed with it, you might not make any money with that… there’s always going to be some type of obstacle in the way. All of those things will go away if you really focus on what makes you happy.”
This was another documentary so there weren’t many quotes I could pull out of the film, but it was such a great film. It makes you feel like anything is possible if you believe. It’s super interesting as well. I definitely would recommend it.

“The battle of censorship will not be finally settled by your honor’s decision, but you will either add to liberal-educated thinking, or by your decision you will add fuel to the fire of ignorance. Let there be light. Let there be honesty. Let there be no running from non-existent destroyers of morals. Let there be honest understanding.”
I couldn’t really find any quotes for the film because it’s like a documentary so lots of the lines are from the actual poem and trial. It’s a really good film, and the animation was phenomenal. If you’re into film-y movies, you’ll love it. You could tell they put in a lot of time to completely support the rhetoric of the movie. I definitely recommend it.

“People, I have discovered, are layers and layers of secrets. You believe you know them, that you understand them, but their motives are always hidden from you, buried in their own hearts. You will never know them, but sometimes you decide to trust them.”
“Sleep,” he says. “I’ll fight the bad dreams off if they come to get you.” “With what?” “My bare hands, obviously.”
“I read somewhere, one, that crying defies scientific explanation. Tears are only meant to lubricate the eyes. There is no real reason for tear glands to overproduce tears at the behest of emotion. I think we cry to release the animal parts of us without losing our humanity. Because inside of me is a beast that snarls, and growls, and strains toward freedom, toward Tobias, and, above all, towards life. And as hard as I try, I cannot kill it.”
“Sometimes,” he says, sliding his arm across my shoulders, “people just want to be happy, even if it’s not real.”
“There is always somthing to learn, always somthing that is important to understand.”
I’ve been busy so I haven’t had time to read. I had to speed read this because I don’t have the attention span with everything going on in my life right now. I liked it, but it was so teenagerish for my liking. It was still a great book. It’s one of those books you need to read in all one go because there are many characters you’ll forget if you put it down for a while. Anyways, I would still recommend it to others.

“We’re all weird. Especially him. But there’s something kind of fantastic about that, isn’t there?”
“In the end, we all die. Unless you change.”
“If you’re gonna cuss with somebody, you’re not gonna cuss with me, you little cuss!”
I really like the film because it was so random. I thought it was a satire at first at typical movies because it was just so ridiculously funny. My favorite part was the black power. I also loved the three fat guy song. It was really funny. There’s nothing else to really say other than that.

“I have a theory that selflessness and bravery aren’t all that different.”
“Becoming fearless isn’t the point. That’s impossible. It’s learning how to control your fear, and how to be free from it.”
“Human beings as a whole cannot be good for long before the bad creeps back in and poisons us again.”
“His absence will haunt their hallways, and he will be a space they can’t fill. And then time will pass, and the hole will be gone, like when an organ is removed and the body’s fluids flow into the space it leaves. Humans can’t tolerate emptiness for long.”
“I like to think I’m helping them by hating them. I’m reminding them that they aren’t God’s gift to humankind.”
“Politeness is just deception in a pretty packaging.”
Like others, I found this book way too similar of The Hunger Games. It’s not a bad thing, but I just felt like it was the same exact idea just twisted up a bit so I was really critical of the book. I like the ideas and the plot to it, but once again I just felt like it was a copy of the Hunger Games. It’s still a good book regardless. Since I was being more critical, I felt like it was a little too girly for my taste. I like the hallucination idea, but it reminds me too much of the tracker jackers. I can’t really elaborate. All I can say once again, it’s a great book, but it’s way too similar to the Hunger Games.
